SDC update January 2025

The transport sector has a dire shortage of truckers. At the same time, pressure on truck drivers is increasing. They are criticized for not driving economically enough and arriving too late at their destination. Apployee is looking for solutions and offers a well-thought-out leadership program in which the focus areas are motivation, driving behavior, safety and health. With the integration of the BigMile Emission API, it now also adds sustainability to this.

Real-time driving behavior

Apployee uses a lot of data as the basis of its coaching program in combination with Organizational Behavior Management (OBM), a proven method that can ensure structural and lasting behavioral change to secure an optimization drive in organizations. ‘If you can honestly measure the pure behavior of drivers, you can start steering behavioral change as a manager’, explains co-founder Dylan van Heugten.

It starts with analysing the driver’s driving behaviour, looking at the circumstances in which the driver transports his load. This involves technical data of the vehicle, the weight of the load, weather conditions and road conditions and culture within the company. In addition, drivers can also opt for a connection with a smartwatch with which vitality can also be measured in real time. Van Heugten: ‘Where most solutions focus on on-board computer data only, we take into account all these factors that influence the driver’s driving behaviour. We then teach the manager how to look at the data and how to positively coach the driver on his driving behaviour.’

Investment in CO2 reduction

Better driving behavior not only leads to lower costs and improved road safety, but also results in fuel savings. ‘On average, we see a CO2 reduction of 8 percent with our customers. One of our customers who is involved in heavy transport has even managed to save 14 percent and now wants to invest this profit in HVO100 fuel for further CO2 reduction. That was an important reason for us to be able to make the CO2 calculations in a validated way and to go into business with BigMile’, says Van Heugten.

Sven Poot, Business Development Manager at BigMile, is enthusiastic about the integration between Apployee and BigMile: ‘Trucks transport 75 percent of European freight in quantity and 85 percent of perishable, valuable and medical goods, such as vaccines and food. Truck drivers are therefore essential to our economy, but they are under great pressure. Apployee is actively committed to improving their working situation. A fantastic side effect is that they also reduce CO2 emissions with their solutions. Thanks to the ISO 14083 verification, BigMile can calculate and report these CO2 emissions in a demonstrably reliable way, fully in line with European legislation and environmental requirements.’
